BJP Faces Reduction in Rajya Sabha Strength To 86

Recently, the BJP’s numbers in the Rajya Sabha decreased by four as nominated members – Rakesh Sinha, Ram Shakal, Sonal Mansingh, and Mahesh Jethmalani – completed their terms. These members, chosen initially by President Droupadi Murmu on the ruling party’s advice, had supported Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Impact of Reduced Strength

With these retirements, the BJP’s tally in the Rajya Sabha now stands at 86 seats, and the broader National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is at 101 seats. This is below the current majority mark of 113 in the 245-member House. However, the NDA still holds sway with the support of seven remaining nominated MPs and one independent member.

Current Composition

The Rajya Sabha currently has 225 members. The opposition, led by the Congress, has 87 seats, including 26 from the Congress party, 13 from the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and 10 each from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and DMK.

Implications for Legislation

The BJP now needs to collaborate closely with non-NDA parties like AIADMK and YSR Congress, along with nominated MPs, to pass bills in the Upper House until the vacancies are filled. Elections are due this year for 11 vacant seats, and the BJP is expected to win at least eight of them, bolstering its position.

Vacant Seats and Future Prospects

There are 20 vacant seats in the Rajya Sabha, including 11 elected positions set for polls this year. The BJP-led alliance is well-positioned to win seven seats from Assam, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Tripura. Additionally, efforts to retain support in Maharashtra could secure two more seats.

Looking Ahead

With potential victories in upcoming elections and continued support from nominated members and allies like the YSR Congress, the BJP aims to surpass the majority mark of 113 in the Rajya Sabha comfortably. This strategic maneuvering is crucial as political dynamics evolve ahead of essential legislative sessions.
