Empowering Innovation: India’s New Hub for Quantum and 6G Excellence!

In a significant move to strengthen India’s presence in quantum and 6G technologies, the Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCOE) India has partnered with Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Karnataka to launch a new Centre of Excellence (CoE). This initiative, based at the VTU-Visvesvaraya Research and Innovation Foundation (VRIF) in Bangalore, aims to accelerate advancements in these critical fields.

What the Centre Will Do
The CoE is designed as a hub-and-spoke model, with TCOE India and VTU-VRIF serving as the central hub. By tapping into the resources and expertise of VTU’s 228 affiliated colleges, the CoE will facilitate research and development, aiming to streamline cutting-edge innovations in quantum technology and related 5G/6G sectors.
This collaborative approach will bring together vertical innovation groups and top experts from these colleges to enhance research efforts. The centre also seeks to foster partnerships among key organizations involved in telecom standardization, including the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), Bharat 6G Alliance, TSDSI, and various startups.

Impact on Students and Researchers
The CoE is set to empower a vast network of over 400,000 students and more than 2,000 PhD candidates across VTU’s affiliated institutions. By focusing on research and development, the centre aims to drive the commercialization of groundbreaking technologies.

Ajai Chowdhury, Chairman of the Mission Governing Board for the National Quantum Mission, highlighted that we currently have around 600 scientists and about 50 startups working in the quantum technology space. Since launching the National Quantum Mission in April 2023, India has been making significant strides in building capabilities in this area.
