Sitharaman’s Comments Fuel Backlash After EY Employee’s Untimely Death Coz Toxic Work Culture
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman faced criticism this week over her comments regarding work pressure following the tragic death of 26-year-old Anna Sebastian Perayil, an employee at EY India. At an event in Chennai, she emphasized the importance of developing inner strength through spiritual practices to cope with pressure. However, her remarks were met with backlash, with many accusing her of being insensitive and engaging in “victim shaming.”
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Priyanka Chaturvedi took to social media, arguing that Anna had already shown tremendous inner strength while pursuing her challenging Chartered Accountancy degree. Chaturvedi pointed out that the toxic work culture and long hours ultimately harmed Anna, urging Sitharaman to be more sensitive in her comments.
In response, Sitharaman clarified that her remarks were meant to highlight a newly established meditation hall at the university aimed at helping students build resilience. She noted that her comments were not directed at Anna or her situation. “I did not name anyone, nor did I intend to blame the victim,” she said.
Sitharaman reiterated that she intended to stress the importance of support from institutions and families for young people facing pressure. She also mentioned that the Union Labour Ministry has committed to investigating the allegations surrounding Anna’s demanding work environment.

Anna, who died on July 20, had been vocal about her struggles with her workload. Her mother’s letter to EY India’s leadership, which went viral, highlighted the toll that Anna’s heavy workload, including working late nights and weekends, had taken on her mental and physical health, sparking outrage over work-related stress.
In the wake of this tragedy, EY India expressed deep sorrow and pledged to seriously address Anna’s family’s concerns. They acknowledged that Anna, who joined their Pune office only four months ago, was a valued team member, and her loss is felt deeply by everyone at the firm. They committed to supporting her family during this difficult time, including financial assistance and counseling services.
