A massive explosion at a chemical factory in Dombivli, Thane, near Mumbai, has left eight people dead and at least 60 injured. The blast occurred on Thursday when a boiler inside the Amudan Chemical Company exploded, causing a fire. Witnesses reported hearing three explosions, and the impact created a large crater, damaging nearby factories and shattering windows.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stated that eight people have been rescued, and emergency teams, including NDRF, TDRF, and the fire brigade, are on site. Rescue operations are ongoing, with drones being used to locate those still trapped. About 15 fire engines are working to control the blaze, which has spread to two other buildings, including a car showroom.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site and announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased and assured that the state would cover the medical expenses of the injured. He also ordered the closure of high-risk chemical units and called for an investigation into the incident.
The explosion’s shockwaves bent iron beams, blew off roofs, and caused significant damage to nearby structures, including a temple where devotees managed to escape safely. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, and rescue efforts continue.
