INDIA Bloc Leads in Uttar Pradesh with 43 Lok Sabha Seats
The opposition INDIA bloc has taken the lead in Uttar Pradesh, securing 43 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state. However, some of these victories come with legal complications, as six winning MPs face criminal charges that could potentially jeopardize their positions in Parliament if convicted.
MPs Facing Criminal Charges
Afzal Ansari (Samajwadi Party) – Ghazipur
Afzal Ansari won the Ghazipur seat but was sentenced to four years in prison under the Gangster Act. The Allahabad High Court stayed his conviction, allowing him to contest the election. The case will resume in July after the court’s summer break.
Dharmendra Yadav (Samajwadi Party) – Azamgarh
Dharmendra Yadav, who won the Azamgarh seat, has four pending cases, including one for forgery.
Rambhual Nishad (Samajwadi Party) – Sultanpur
Rambhual Nishad defeated BJP’s Maneka Gandhi in Sultanpur. He has eight cases against him, including charges under the Gangster Act.
Virendra Singh (Samajwadi Party) – Chandauli
Virendra Singh emerged victorious in Chandauli by defeating former minister Mahendra Nath Pandey. He faces three criminal cases, including one for house trespassing.
Babu Singh Kushwaha (Samajwadi Party) – Jaunpur
Babu Singh Kushwaha, who won the Jaunpur seat, is ending a 10-year political hiatus. He faces multiple charges related to the NRHM scam during the Mayawati regime, with charges framed in eight out of the 25 cases against him.
Imran Masood (Congress) – Saharanpur
Imran Masood won from Saharanpur with 44.6% of the vote. He has eight cases registered against him, including one for money laundering, with charges framed in two cases.
Chandrashekhar Azad (Azad Samaj Party) – Nagina
Chandrashekhar Azad registered his first Lok Sabha win from Nagina. He has promised to support the INDIA bloc from the outside when necessary. Despite having over 30 cases registered against him, he has not been convicted in any so far.
BJP Leaders Also Facing Charges
Several BJP leaders from Uttar Pradesh who won the elections are also facing criminal charges.
