Delhi High Court Halts Arvind Kejriwal’s Bail in Corruption Case: A Detailed Overview

Arvind Kejriwal faced a setback today as the Delhi High Court halted his bail in a corruption case related to the Delhi Liquor Policy. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a petition challenging his bail from the trial court just hours before he was set to be released from Tihar jail.

The ED urgently requested a hearing on their petition, which was scheduled before a bench of Justices Sudhir Kumar Jain and Ravinder Dudeja. The high court decided to pause the trial court’s bail order until they could review the ED’s petition.

Arvind Kejriwal’s wife, Sunita Kejriwal, and leaders from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) had planned to visit Tihar Jail to greet the Delhi Chief Minister, but this visit was disrupted by the court’s decision.

Earlier, a Delhi court had granted bail to Mr. Kejriwal on a personal bond of ₹1 lakh with certain conditions, including that he must not interfere with the investigation or influence witnesses. The court accepted Mr. Kejriwal’s argument that the ED had not provided sufficient evidence since his arrest on March 21.

Despite repeated denials of bail in previous hearings, Arvind Kejriwal has continued in his role as Delhi Chief Minister, ignoring calls from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for his resignation.

In a previous instance, the Supreme Court had granted interim bail to Mr. Kejriwal for election campaigning. However, he returned to prison shortly before the election results were announced.

The ED’s allegations against Mr. Kejriwal involve accusations of money laundering in connection with the 2021-22 Delhi liquor policy, which was ultimately scrapped after concerns were raised by the Lieutenant Governor. The ED claims that funds received from liquor sellers were used to finance AAP’s campaign in Goa, where Mr. Kejriwal serves as the party’s convenor.
