India Yanks High Commissioner from Canada Amid Nijjar’s Murder Accusations

In a dramatic escalation of diplomatic tensions, India has pulled its High Commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Verma, following explosive allegations from Ottawa linking him and other diplomats to the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The Indian government has slammed these accusations as “preposterous,” accusing Canada of playing a political game to appease its voter base.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Canada’s Charge d’Affaires, stating, “We have no faith in the current Canadian Government’s commitment to ensure the safety of our diplomats.” In an atmosphere rife with extremism and violence, the MEA expressed grave concerns about the security of Indian officials in Canada, leading to the decision to withdraw Verma and other targeted diplomats.

Canada’s suggestion that he is a “person of interest” in the Nijjar investigation has only intensified the fallout. India responded with outrage, calling the allegations “ludicrous” and an insult to Verma’s distinguished 36-year diplomatic career, which includes stints as an ambassador in Japan and Sudan. The MEA declared these aspersions a “strategy of smearing India for political gains.”

India’s diplomatic ties with Canada are at a low point, with the government accusing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of fostering an environment that allows extremist and separatist sentiments to thrive against India. The Indian government has previously criticized Trudeau’s past attempts to curry favor with specific voter groups, highlighting his cabinet’s associations with extremist elements.

Tensions have been brewing since last year when India curtailed visas for Canadians and forced a reduction in Canadian diplomatic staff in India. This latest crisis comes just days after a brief encounter between Prime Minister Modi and Trudeau at the ASEAN Summit, which reportedly involved no substantive discussion.

As India continues to assert that Canada provides safe harbor to pro-Khalistan activists, Trudeau remains steadfast in his position, insisting that the matter will be handled with the same resolve. The diplomatic showdown is far from over, and India is poised to take further action in response to what it sees as Canadian government support for extremism.
