Indore Sets the Standard as India’s First Beggar-Free City

In a bold move to make Indore a beggar-free city, local authorities announced on Monday that starting January 1, 2025, anyone caught giving alms to beggars will face legal consequences. District Collector Ashish Singh revealed that the administration has already issued an official order banning begging throughout the city.

Singh told the press, “We will continue our awareness campaign against begging throughout December, but starting January 1, anyone found giving alms will be subject to an FIR.” He urged the people of Indore to avoid supporting begging, emphasizing, “I request all residents to refrain from contributing to this practice and not become complicit in it.”

Authorities have also uncovered several gangs that exploit people through begging and have worked to rehabilitate many individuals caught in this cycle, Singh added.
This initiative is part of a larger pilot project launched by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, which aims to eliminate begging in 10 major cities, including Indore.
