Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder: Mamata’s Response, CBI Inquiry, and the Outcry for Justice
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has visited the grieving family of a young doctor whose brutal murder has shaken the state. Despite her public assurances of justice and her willingness to support a CBI inquiry, the horrific details of the case suggest profound systemic failures and a potential cover-up that cannot be ignored.
A Nightmare Unfolds
The victim, a 31-year-old Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College doctor, had been on a grueling 36-hour on-call duty. On the night of the incident, she was seen in good spirits, cheering for Neeraj Chopra with her colleagues before resting briefly in the third-floor Seminar Hall of the pulmonology department. By morning, her junior colleagues discovered her lifeless body, partially naked and marred by gruesome injuries—her sternum, collarbone, and pelvic joint were broken. Blood streamed from her eyes, mouth, and private parts while eleven injury marks spanned her body.
Shockingly, the police initially tried to dismiss this heinous crime as a suicide, attempting to rob the victim’s family of justice. Even more appalling, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the principal of the medical college, echoed this narrative, heartlessly suggesting that the victim was “irresponsible” for being alone at night.
A Sinister Cover-Up?
Public outrage forced the police to finally register the case as rape-murder, leading to the arrest of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer allegedly caught on camera entering and leaving the premises. However, questions remain: How could a man with no official police status live on the Kolkata Police’s premises and move freely through the hospital? The answer may lie in Roy’s alleged connections with Dr. Ghosh, a man with a troubling history of corruption and intimidation. Ghosh, who has faced numerous allegations, including irregularities and corruption, was inexplicably transferred instead of being removed from his position following the incident. The transfer did little to reassure the public, given his swift reinstatement after previous transfers due to other controversies.
Suspicion and Silence
Despite widespread demands, the authorities have yet to release CCTV footage from the crime scene, claiming the cameras were conveniently non-functional on the day of the incident. This, coupled with the hasty post-mortem and cremation, raises serious doubts about the integrity of the investigation. Former police officer IPS Pankaj Dutta has openly questioned the rush to cremate the body and the failure to thoroughly question all those present in the building during the crime.
Whispers of a more sinister cover-up are growing louder, with a viral audio clip suggesting that an intern with political ties might be involved—screenshots of WhatsApp conversations between students further fuel suspicions, implicating Dr. Ghosh to conceal the truth.
Justice Denied?
As the investigation drags on, it is becoming increasingly clear that the justice the victim’s family seeks may be elusive. Dr. Manas Gumta, former secretary of the Association of Health Service Doctors, has condemned the government’s failure to remove Ghosh from his post, calling for his arrest and a thorough investigation of his role in the tragedy.
The response from political leaders like TMC’s Abhishek Banerjee, who has called for an encounter killing of the perpetrators, has only added fuel to the fire. Critics argue that such statements are attempts to distract from the real issue—a systemic failure that allowed this tragedy to happen in the first place.
A Cry for Accountability
This case is a chilling reminder of the dangers lurking in institutions meant to heal and protect. The allegations of corruption, political influence, and gross negligence point to a deeper rot within the system. The victim and her family deserve justice, not hollow promises. The public must demand accountability, not just for the perpetrators, but for all those who allowed this horrific crime to occur under their watch.
