NEET Controversy Sparks Parliamentary Debate Amid Student Protests

Current Student Protests Spark Parliamentary Debate on NEET Issues

Amid escalating student protests nationwide over alleged irregularities in the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test) and other competitive exams, the Opposition has announced plans to address the issue during tomorrow’s parliamentary session. Despite the agenda focusing on the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address, the Opposition aims to confront the government over the ongoing controversy.

Sources close to the government have expressed unwavering confidence in their readiness to address any queries related to NEET during the parliamentary debate. They highlighted measures already taken, including a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and the formation of a special committee to investigate the matter, with the committee’s report expected soon. The government has also reinforced strict measures against cheating and paper leaks, signaling a commitment to strengthen the education system.

Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan is prepared to respond to NEET-related concerns if raised during tomorrow’s session despite facing opposition backlash earlier this week. President Droupadi Murmu addressed the NEET issue in today’s joint parliamentary session, affirming the government’s unwavering dedication to a fair and thorough investigation.

“The opposition will be aggressive,” remarked senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh following a meeting today. “The mandate from the recent Lok Sabha elections is a personal, political, and moral setback for the Prime Minister, and the opposition will remind him of this daily.”

The decision to prioritize NEET in parliamentary discussions was made after an evening meeting amidst widespread public outcry since the results were announced on June 4. Protests and demonstrations have swept across the country, alleging paper leaks and favoritism in marking.

Earlier today, the Congress student wing NSUI stormed the NTA (National Testing Agency) office responsible for conducting NEET, demanding its closure. This action followed a protest by the Youth Congress near Parliament.

The NEET controversy, coinciding with the general election results, has provided the rejuvenated opposition with its first and fervent opportunity to challenge the BJP-led government at the start of its third term. Rahul Gandhi of the Congress criticized BJP-ruled states, labeling them as hotbeds of paper leaks. He cited the Vyapam scam in Madhya Pradesh from 15 years ago as an example of widespread irregularities in government job entrance exams. He suggested that this issue has since spread to all BJP-ruled states, referencing recent paper leaks in the Uttar Pradesh Police Constable exam.

In response, the government has accused key INDIA ally Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Tejashwi Yadav of having connections with those arrested in Bihar regarding the paper leak case, an allegation denied by the RJD.
