United Under the Tiranga: 78 Years of Independence Day 2024
This August 15, India will celebrate its 78th Independence Day, marking another year of freedom from British rule. Our independence came at a tremendous cost, with countless freedom fighters sacrificing their lives, enduring harassment, and languishing in jails. As Indians, we must honor and remember these brave souls who gave everything so we could live in a free nation.
Har Ghar Tiranga: A Proud Tradition
In 2022, as part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, the Indian government launched the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign. Over 50 million people proudly uploaded selfies with the national flag that year. This year, on August 8, 2024, the government announced the third edition of this campaign, scheduled from August 9 to August 15, 2024. This celebration of our national flag starts a few days before Independence Day each year, inviting every Indian to bring the Tiranga home and hoist it with pride.
The campaign aims to strengthen the connection between citizens and the national flag. Instead of viewing it only in formal settings, bringing the Tiranga into our homes symbolizes our commitment to nation-building.
A Call from the Prime Minister
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken social media to encourage everyone to participate. He said, “As this year’s Independence Day approaches, let’s make Har Ghar Tiranga a memorable mass movement again. I am changing my profile picture, and I urge you all to join me in celebrating our Tricolour by doing the same. And yes, do share your selfies on harghartiranga.com.”
In his 112th edition of the monthly radio broadcast ‘Mann ki Baat,’ PM Modi further encouraged everyone to join the campaign, emphasizing the importance of proudly displaying the Indian flag.
Nationwide Celebrations
The Indian government has organized Tiranga Yatras across states from August 11 to August 13, 2024. These yantras symbolize our unity and diversity as people from all walks of life come together to celebrate our national flag. On August 14, Partition Remembrance Day will be observed across all districts with a silent march, ensuring we remember all aspects of our struggle for freedom and the sacrifices made during the partition.
How to Get Your Har Ghar Tiranga Certificate
Participating in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign is simple:
- Visit harghartiranga.com and click on “Upload Selfie.”
- Enter your name, phone number, state, and country.
- Upload your selfie with the Tiranga.
- Grant permission for the portal to display your picture and click on “Generate Certificate.”
By doing this, you become part of a nationwide movement, celebrating our freedom and the values our flag represents.
Respecting the Tiranga: Dos and Don’ts
The Indian flag is not just a piece of cloth; it’s a powerful symbol of our nation’s independence and pride. Here’s how you can show it the respect it deserves:
- Correct Order: The top band of the Indian flag should always be saffron, and the bottom should be green. It should never be hoisted inverted. This is a small but significant way to show respect for our national flag.
- Good Condition: Ensure the flag is in good condition. A torn or damaged flag should never be displayed.
- Standing Tall: The flag should always stand upright and never be dipped.
- Not a Decoration: The flag is not a decorative item. It should be placed at a high point and never used as a festoon, rosette, or bunting.
- No Costumes: The flag should not be part of any costume, uniform, or accessory.
- Proper Ratio: While the flag can be any size, it must maintain a ratio of 3:2.
