Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Looks Forward to Resuming Talks with PM Modi
In a recent interview with CBC News, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed optimism about reigniting discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi now that he has secured a third term. Trudeau highlighted the importance of addressing critical issues concerning national security and upholding the rule of law, which had previously strained relations between Canada and India.
Trudeau emphasized the alignment between the two nations on several significant global and democratic issues. He noted that with the Indian elections behind them, there is now an opportunity to engage constructively on matters vital to both countries’ interests.
Relations between India and Canada had soured last year due to allegations made by Trudeau regarding the alleged involvement of Indian government agents in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and a wanted terrorist in India. India vehemently denied these allegations, labeling them as baseless and politically motivated. India also expressed concerns regarding Canada becoming a hub for pro-Khalistan Sikh separatists, which Canada has not officially acknowledged.

Trudeau’s remarks followed a recent meeting with PM Modi at the G7 summit in Italy, where PM Modi tweeted a photo of their interaction. Trudeau’s tweet congratulating PM Modi on his electoral victory earlier this month underscored Canada’s commitment to advancing bilateral relations rooted in human rights, diversity, and the rule of law.
The meeting between Trudeau and Modi was part of ongoing efforts to strengthen ties despite past tensions. Trudeau’s positive outlook signals a willingness to move forward and collaborate on mutual concerns as both nations navigate complex global challenges.
