Calcutta High Court Orders CBI Enquiry in Rape and Murder of Female Doctor

In a significant move that is expected to expedite the investigation, the Calcutta High Court has ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the probe into the rape and murder of a female doctor. The court directed the police to hand over all relevant documents to the CBI by 10 AM on Wednesday. This decision came after the court expressed concern over delays in the investigation, particularly in recording the statement of a former principal involved in the case.

Nationwide Protests by Doctors

The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association (FORDA) has shown remarkable unity by extending its indefinite strike to protest the horrific incident at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Despite discussions with officials from the Union Health Ministry, no resolution was reached, prompting doctors in government hospitals across the country to continue their strike. Following FORDA’s call for action, the strike disrupted outpatient services and FORDA’s emergency surgeries.

Accused’s Disturbing Background

Kolkata Police have uncovered deeply disturbing details about the accused, Sanjay Roy, who is currently in 14-day police custody. Investigators revealed that Roy had a history of consuming violent and disturbing pornographic content and faced numerous disputes in his domestic life. After committing the crime, Roy allegedly returned home, slept for a few hours, and then attempted to destroy evidence by washing his clothes.

Political Reactions and Statements

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had earlier stated that the case would be handed over to the CBI if the police failed to resolve it by Sunday. Following public outrage, the CBI has now officially taken over the investigation. Union Health Minister JP Nadda welcomed the High Court’s decision, expressing confidence that the CBI will uncover the truth.

Nadda also condemned the incident, describing it as profoundly distressing, and criticized the state government for handling it. He emphasized the need for swift action to address the increasing violence against women in Bengal.

Continued Strike and Demands from Doctors

Despite the CBI taking over the case, FORDA has announced that the strike will continue until their demands are fully met. These include implementing the Central Healthcare Protection Act to ensure the safety of medical professionals. The National Medical Commission, under the direction of Union Health Minister Nadda, has issued an advisory to all medical colleges and institutions to ensure a safe working environment.

Political Responses

TMC leader Kunal Ghosh defended the state government, arguing that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had no objections to the CBI investigation. He questioned the BJP’s calls for Banerjee’s resignation, pointing out that no resignations occurred in similar cases in BJP-governed states like Unnao and Hathras.

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA), a leading professional association of doctors, has announced that its representatives will meet with Chief Minister Banerjee on Wednesday to discuss the situation. IMA leaders have also met with Health Minister Nadda, urging the government to declare hospitals and medical colleges as safe zones.

Doctors and Political Leaders Welcome CBI Probe

Doctors at RG Kar Medical College, including residential doctor Lohari Sarkar, have welcomed the High Court’s decision to transfer the case to the CBI. However, they emphasized that their protest will continue until those responsible are identified and punished. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari also praised the verdict, calling for the court to monitor the CBI investigation to ensure justice is served swiftly.
