Meet IPS Nalin Prabhat: The New Special DGP Ready to Tackle J&K’s Challenges

Nalin Prabhat, a highly decorated IPS officer, will become the new Special Director General of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in October. This change comes after the Home Ministry decided to shorten his term as Director General of the National Security Guard (NSG) and assign him to the AGMUT cadre.

According to the Home Ministry’s order, Prabhat, from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, will move to Jammu and Kashmir immediately. He will take over from RR Swain, who will retire on September 30. Prabhat’s appointment is initially for a three-year term.

Prabhat steps into this role at a critical time when the Kashmir Valley has been experiencing a surge in terrorist activity and violent clashes. The new Director General is expected to bring a strategic approach to managing the law enforcement challenges in the region.

Prabhat, a 1992-batch IPS officer, has served as the NSG DG since April 2024. At 55, he has had a distinguished career with several awards, including three Police Gallantry Medals and the Parakram Padak. He has a strong background in counter-insurgency, having previously led the Greyhounds, a specialized anti-Naxal unit in Andhra Pradesh.

Jammu and Kashmir have faced increased terrorist attacks in recent months, with frequent encounters, such as an assault on an army convoy in Kathua and skirmishes in Doda and Udhampur. This year alone, around 20 soldiers and over a dozen civilians have been killed in these clashes. Recently, an Indian Army captain succumbed to injuries from an encounter in Doda district.

In response to the rising violence, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held a crucial meeting on Wednesday to address the growing number of terror-related incidents in Jammu and Kashmir.
