Will Mamata Banerjee Resignation Offer End the Deadlock in Doctor Protests?
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made a dramatic offer to resign amid the ongoing standoff with protesting doctors over the tragic death of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Banerjee emphasized that her priority is justice, not her position. “I am ready to step down as Chief Minister if it means achieving justice. My only concern is ensuring justice is served,” she stated.
The conflict escalated after the body of a postgraduate trainee doctor was discovered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, showing severe injuries. In response to the incident, the Calcutta High Court has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.
On September 12, the West Bengal government proposed a 5 pm meeting to address the deadlock, but the doctors’ demand for a live telecast of the talks was denied. One of the protesting doctors, Aniket Mahato, told PTI they would boycott the meeting if it weren’t streamed live.

“We’ve been waiting for over two hours for the doctors we invited,” Banerjee said. “We’ve reached out and received assurances, but still, no one has shown up. Dialogue is the only way to find solutions.”
Banerjee also apologized to the people of Bengal for the turmoil and urged junior doctors to return to their duties and continue serving the state.
