PM Modi Criticizes Opposition Walkout in Rajya Sabha Over Speech Disruptions
Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Opposition today as they walked out of the Rajya Sabha during his response to the Motion of Thanks to the President’s address. The walkout occurred after Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar denied permission for Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge to intervene during the Prime Minister’s speech.
Taking a swipe at former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, PM Modi remarked that the Opposition was accustomed to governing passively, suggesting they lacked proactive engagement. He asserted that his government was committed to hard work and aimed to surpass the achievements of the past decade, viewing it as a mere beginning compared to their future ambitions.
During the commotion, Opposition MPs demanded that Kharge be allowed to speak, chanting slogans urging the Chairman to grant him a voice. Despite repeated requests from Kharge, the session became contentious, with slogans like “stop lying” and “have shame” echoing through the chamber.
PM Modi paused to address the disruptions, stating that those spreading falsehoods lacked the courage to hear the truth and were disrespecting parliamentary traditions. As tensions escalated, the Opposition eventually walked out.
Chairman Dhankhar condemned the disruptions as “unparliamentary,” emphasizing that such conduct disrespected the House and its constitutional values. He hoped the MPs would reflect on their behavior and return to their responsibilities.

PM Modi continued his offensive against the Congress, accusing them of being historically opposed to the Constitution, particularly during the Emergency period. He highlighted the significance of the 1977 Lok Sabha elections in reaffirming democracy, asserting that recent elections had similarly upheld constitutional principles.
In response, Mallikarjun Kharge countered on social media, accusing PM Modi of lying about the Opposition’s stance on the Constitution. He recalled historical opposition by BJP-RSS and their predecessors to the Constitution, including incidents of burning effigies of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and Jawaharlal Nehru. Kharge credited the Congress for Dr. Ambedkar’s role in drafting the Constitution, emphasizing their commitment to democratic values.
