Remembering Murasoli Selvam the Heart of DMK

Murasoli Selvam, a cherished figure in Tamil Nadu and the brother-in-law of Chief Minister MK Stalin, sadly passed away at age 85. His departure leaves a profound void within his family and the heart of the DMK party, where he played an instrumental role as the former editor of its mouthpiece, Murasoli.

Married to Selvi, the daughter of the late M Karunanidhi, Selvam was deeply intertwined with the DMK’s legacy. He was also the brother of former Union Minister Murasoli Maran, making his influence even more significant. In a poignant tribute on X, Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed his grief, saying, “Today I have lost that last shoulder to lean on – the pillar of principle.”

Selvam’s journey ended abruptly in Bengaluru on October 10 due to a heart attack. Just a day earlier, he was still passionately engaged with Murasoli, discussing his work and finalizing a cartoon for the publication. Known by his pen name, Silandhi, he continued to inspire through his writing until the end.

He made headlines in 1992 when he became the first editor in Tamil Nadu to be reprimanded at the Bar of the Legislative Assembly for allegedly violating its privileges. The Chennai Press Club recalled that M Karunanidhi once remarked that he felt more joy seeing Selvam at the Bar than on his wedding day, underscoring their deep bond and respect.

Stalin remembered Selvam, who skillfully managed Murasoli, whom Karunanidhi affectionately called his “first child.” His impact extended beyond journalism, influencing cinema and the DMK’s electoral strategies. “He shaped the ideas of both Kalaignar and Murasoli Maran, serving as a true voice of democracy,” Stalin said, reflecting on Selvam’s invaluable contributions.

In his memoir, ‘Murasoli Sila Ninaivugal’ (A Few Memories of Murasoli), he captured the essence of his experiences, shedding light on the newspaper’s resilience amid political challenges.
As the DMK mourns this significant loss, they have announced that the party’s flag will be flown at half-mast for three days in honor of Selvam. He leaves a loving wife and daughter behind, and all who knew him will deeply feel his absence.
