Squid Game vs. Luck: Is Netflix’s Hit Series a Copycat?
Actor and director Sohum Shah has recently accused the creators of “Squid Game” of plagiarism, claiming that Netflix’s hit show copied the plot of his 2009 film, “Luck.” Shah has taken legal action against Netflix, alleging copyright infringement. He argues that “Squid Game” is similar to “Luck,” which features a story about a group of people in debt who compete in deadly games for a large cash prize. As the contestants die, the prize money grows, mirroring the central concept of “Squid Game.”
Netflix has strongly denied these allegations, with a spokesperson asserting that the claims lack substance. The streaming giant is committed to defending the show’s writer, Hwang Dong Hyuk, against the lawsuit. According to Netflix, Hwang Dong Hyuk began developing “Squid Game” in 2009, the same year “Luck” was released.
Sohum Shah, however, maintains that he conceived his story in 2006, years before “Luck” hit theaters in India, the UK, the US, and the UAE. Despite these legal proceedings, there has been no significant development in the case.

“Luck,” which features a star-studded cast including Mithun Chakraborty, Shruti Haasan, Imran Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Danny Denzongpa, Ravi Kishan, and Chitrashi Rawat, revolves around a similar premise to “Squid Game.” Meanwhile, “Squid Game” creators have announced a second season, promising more intense and gripping content.
