Supreme Court of India Takes Action Against Social Media Scammer

Impersonation Incident Reported

Recently, the Supreme Court of India became involved in a case of social media fraud in which someone impersonated Chief Justice DY Chandrachud. According to the Hindustan Times, the scammer used the Chief Justice’s name and image to trick people into sending money. This incident highlights the need for social media platforms to implement stricter verification processes to prevent such impersonation scams.

Fraudulent Request for Cab Fare

The impersonator sent a message on social media requesting ₹500 from a user named Kailash Meghwal. Claiming to be CJI Chandrachud, the scammer said they needed the money to get a cab to an urgent Collegium meeting and promised to repay the amount once they reached the Supreme Court. The message also falsely claimed that the Chief Justice was stranded at Connaught Place in Delhi and included a seemingly authentic touch by stating, “Sent from iPad.”

Delhi Police Intervention

Upon noticing the fraudulent activity, CJI Chandrachud highlighted the issue, prompting the Supreme Court’s security department to file a complaint with the Delhi Police’s cybercrime unit. The proactive role of the Supreme Court in addressing this issue should reassure the public. The police have since registered the complaint and are investigating the matter.

Previous Impersonation Case

This incident follows a similar case from March this year: a 42-year-old man was arrested for impersonating a Delhi Police crime branch inspector. He had deceived people out of ₹4 lakh by pretending to sell luxury items at auction prices. The man was apprehended by the Subzi Mandi police station in January, highlighting the ongoing issue of impersonation scams. This should remind the audience of the need for vigilance in such cases.
