Vijay 69: Anupam Kher’s Late-Blooming Hero Journey Will Leave You Smiling

“Vijay 69,” the latest film from Yash Raj Films (YRF), just dropped on Netflix India on November 8, and it’s already making waves. The movie tells the heartwarming and hilarious story of Vijay, a foul-mouthed, adventurous former swimming coach who, at 69 years old, decides to take on the challenge of completing a triathlon. Played by the legendary Anupam Kher, Vijay’s journey is both inspiring and full of laughs.

The film has received glowing praise from industry veterans, including director Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, known for The Kashmir Files. Agnihotri took to social media to shower Kher with accolades, calling the film a “heartwarming, funny, and touching tale” and praising Kher’s performance for bringing “emotion, laughter, and a top-rated performance.” He also gave a special shout-out to the writer-director, Akshay Roy, for creating such a “must-watch” family film that will fill viewers with hope.

For Kher, it’s another feather in his cap. The actor has been busy lately, with his last appearance in The Signature, a ZEE5 drama released in early October, and his role as Jayaprakash Narayan in the highly anticipated historical drama Emergency directed by Kangana Ranaut (though the release of Emergency has been delayed). Earlier this year, he also appeared in the animated film Chhota Bheem and the Curse of Damyaan and the films Kaagaz 2 and Kuch Khattaa Ho Jaay.

Vijay 69 marks a remarkable comeback for Anupam Kher, who is in top form as Vijay. The film’s comedic tone and heartwarming moments have struck a chord with many viewers. However, some critics have pointed out that the storyline can feel predictable and melodramatic. Still, the movie’s feel-good vibe and Kher’s stellar performance are winning over audiences.

For Chunky Pandey, Vijay 69 is his first film of 2024. He had a busy 2022, with a mix of roles in films like Sardar (a Tamil action-thriller), Nayika Devi: The Warrior Queen (a Gujarati historical drama), and Liger, which featured his daughter Ananya Panday and Vijay Deverakonda. He’s back in a fresh role, and fans are excited to see what’s next.
