Violent Protests and Shocking Revelations: Did Kolkata Police Cover Up a Brutal Crime?

On Tuesday afternoon, Howrah and Kolkata saw violent protests clashes between protesters and police during the ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally. This demonstration was driven by outrage over the brutal rape and murder of a young woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The protesters were demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in response to this horrific crime. As they marched toward the West Bengal secretariat, tensions flared. Protesters threw stones, prompting police to use batons, tear gas, and water cannons to control the situation. Both protesters and police sustained injuries, and numerous arrests were made. The rally, organized by the lesser-known Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj (Society of Students in West Bengal), was declared illegal by authorities.

In preparation for the rally, police set up reinforced barricades with iron rods and deployed a large cargo container near Hastings to block access. Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel and other security guards in riot gear were stationed along critical routes.

The march began around 1 pm from various locations in Howrah and Kolkata, with protesters waving national flags and chanting anti-government slogans as they headed toward the state secretariat. Clashes first erupted at Santragachi in Howrah, where protesters breached a barricade. The police responded with batons, tear gas, and water cannons. Demonstrators then moved to the Santragachi Railway Station, hurling stones at the police.
Similar violence occurred at Kona Expressway, Foreshore Road, and near the iconic Howrah Bridge. On the Kolkata side, protesters attempted but failed to breach barricades on the approach to Vidyasagar Setu (Second Hooghly Bridge), continuing to shout slogans against the government and Mamata Banerjee.

BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari condemned the police’s use of force against what he described as peaceful protesters. He warned that continued police brutality could lead to widespread disruption across Bengal.
In a shocking twist, it was revealed that Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata police civic volunteer accused of rape and murder, had been using a motorcycle registered in the name of the police commissioner. The CBI is investigating his connections within the Kolkata police.

In response to media and social media scrutiny, the Kolkata police issued a statement confirming the bike’s registration in the police commissioner’s name. They clarified that this is standard practice for government vehicles.
The victim was found dead in a seminar hall at the hospital on August 9, where she had gone to rest during a 36-hour shift. Her autopsy revealed she had been raped and sustained 25 internal and external injuries. CCTV footage showed Sanjay Roy in the corridor at the time of the crime.

Reports also suggest that before allegedly committing the crime, Roy had molested another woman and visited red-light areas with a friend, although he did not engage in sexual activity. The CBI’s psychological profile of Roy depicts him as a perverse individual with a severe pornography addiction, deepening the horror surrounding this case.
